Wilson, Nancy Hope. The reason for Janey. Atheneum, 1994. Developmentally disabled adult moves in with the family of a girl whose parents have recently divorced. The adult helps the gifted child learn that living with the truth is better than pretending.

Communication Skill Builders. This book is a very comprehensive and practical book which not only discusses feeding issues, but also provides information on how to choose a pacifier, nipple, cup etc. and how to adapt feeding when the child has difficulties.

Your Child at Play: Birth to One Year (1985) by M. Segal, New York: New Market Press.

Babies With Down Syndrome (1986) by K. Stray-Gunderson, Rockville, MD: Woodbine House.

Down Syndrome: Living and Learning in the Community edited by Lynn and Donna Rosenthal. This book is an invaluable tool for parents and health care professionals. It provides advice with the aim of enabling people with Down Syndrome to better cope with problems and participate to the fullest in community life.

Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents by Libby Kumin Ph.D, CCC-SLP. Provides parents with information about speech and language development from infancy through early adolescence.

Kids Explore the Gifts of Children with Special Needs (1994) by Westrodge Young Writers Workshop, John Muir Publications. This truly impressive book was written by a group of 3rd-6th graders in Colorado who profiled ten youngsters having a wide range of disabilities, including Down Syndrome.

A Guide to Assistive Technology Resources & Adaptations, September, 1993 This is a nationwide list of organizations and programs, catalogues and books and magazines dealing with disabilities.

Parent's First Call Region IV-A Greater Boston/West, Sandy Indelicato (508) 278-0876 or Region VII Boston/Cambridge Joanne Maranian (617) 361-3496.  First Call is an outreach program for new parents of babies born with Down syndrome. Services are free and confidential.

Federation For Children With Special Needs, 95 Berkeley Street, Boston, MA 02116. This organization also publishes a newsletter and hosts workshops, lectures and support groups. They publish an excellent guide to rights of parents and children under Massachusetts and Federal law. The guide is called The Parent Manual and is available from the Federation for about $20.00.
